Tips On How To Weave Your Unique And Rich Family Story Into Your Home Decor.

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

It is so easy to see something we love ❤️ on either Pinterest or Instagram and have the desire to copy it to make our homes look just like theirs. Some of you may even be thrifty and handy and can quickly bring that pin or post to life without much effort or time. That's amazing! But before you dive into your next project, we wanted to encourage you to first thoughtfully consider bringing your own individuality, creativity and experiences into it. Don't just copy, create! As interior designers that have had the privilege of working with some incredible people, we've seen that the best results (and the happiest clients) come when we draw out the personal stories and unique visions they have about the spaces they want to redesign. We then use that background to shape and inspire our work. This process makes the end result more meaningful and inspiring than just copying someone else. It allows you to share your story, through art.

Nate Berkus was right when he said,

“Your home should tell the story of who you are,

and be a collection of what you love.”

Here are few of the ways that you can make your home more personally meaningful:

✨ Incorporate items in your home that remind you of places you have been,

experiences you’ve had, or family heirlooms

✨ Add pieces of Art that tell a story (similar to how music creates nostalgia)

✨ Include colors in your home that reflect you and your family

Joins us as we explore these 3 ways to transform your home into the unique and rich story that your family has to tell. ♥️

1️⃣ Incorporating items in your home that remind you of places you have been, experiences you’ve had, or family heirlooms

Display items in your home that remind you of places you have been, cultures that you have experienced or family Heirlooms that have been tucked away in that unopened box in your attic.

🚫 Now, we are not saying to keep and display every little memorabilia you get from your 10th Disney trip with the family or from your annual family reunion at______________.  (insert the place your family usually gathers)

🔅 Be Intentional in what you choose: Let them be a focal point in the spaces

where you choose to display the pieces.

🔅 Study your pieces: What does that mean? Well I’m glad you asked! Look at

the colors, the size and texture of each piece and make sure it flows

well in the place you would like to use it in.

Here are some examples

One or our clients grew up in El Salvador 🇸🇻 so we really wanted to include items that would remind her of the place she once called home. We found this stunning wood bench at @Nadeu. We loved the details and the rustic edges-the "imperfections" were actually exactly what we were aiming for. Indeed, the expression on our client's face was priceless. We brought some of El Salvador to GA. 😍

Gallery Wall

I love the uniqueness of this cozy gallery wall from @pennyshields. The different sizes of frames and the black and white commonality of all the pictures. It is a collage of what the clients love and adore.

Here is another example from Light & Dwell of including heirlooms in your gallery wall.

2️⃣ Incorporate Art!

Art can come in all shapes and sizes and it can enhance or infuse a mood in a room. Here are a few tips and ideas on how to incorporate art in a space. As you scroll through these pictures let these words sink in.

Tips when you incorporate art.

✨ Take into account the size of your art piece

Try to hang art just below the trim of your door.

Exceptions to the rule-  If you …

- Are doing a gallery wall

- Have ceilings higher than 12ft and the art piece is extra large.

Why? Art is meant to be appreciated at eye level. We see this when

we visit The Louvre and take in those breathtaking pieces.

Here is a great example from  @Kandrackole This picture was taken by @seastararts. Notice that the piece is placed at eye level and centered to the frame of the door.

Keep in mind the ratio of your wall to the size of your art.

@Housesevendesign demonstrates this so flawless. She did a wonderful job taking into account the space of the wall and the size of her frame/art. 🖼

Let’s look at some more great examples!

This was a fun piece to create! Our client is very passionate about music 🎼 music and singing. We were able to find her favorite songs on sheet music and display them inside these stunning frames. Personalized and so simple! 😊 (Aria.Interiors)

The last picture for this category comes from @Katemarketinteriors. We are 😍 obsessed with the layered art look. This is something you can implement on your mantle or on shelves. It’s a beautiful way to add some dimension to your wall.

3️⃣Use Colors that reflect your personality.

Color is such a wonderful way to personalize your space.  But before we go there you have to ask yourself- What color do you want to add into your space? What color reflects you? 🎨

ree

I have a color that I have always loved since I was young. Yup! You guessed it- Pink. 💕

Here is an amazing resource for you to find your right shade for your space!

Now that you have your color let’s explore how to add it to your space.

…Keep in mind that everything is relative to your home style and feel.

Paint or Wallpaper

Wallpaper is another great way to add color to your space. We are loving this vintage Wallpaper from Anthropologie. This one would be perfect for a powder room, or as an accent wall in a guest bedroom. 💗

If you love blue, this Light Blue by @Farrowandball would be such a stunning accent color to add to any space in your home. @Lightanddwell did such a stunning job with this color. It truly completes the room.

Fresh Flowers

If you know me you know I am a sucker for fresh cut flowers. 💐 If you are into deep reds and oranges, rotating Transvaal Daisies and greenery in a stunning vase would be a great way to include this color in your space.
